Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo believes that the new coalition government is too big on spending and is not focused enough on ensuring that there are earnings for the country.
Speaking at a Freedom House press conference last Friday, Mr. Jagdeo said while he supports the current clean up drive underway by the government, he would like to see as much spending to be thrown behind other sectors in the economy.
“What I see is an obsession with spending and so we see a lot of cleaning work being done, and its wonderful, I support it, but cleaning is an expenditure. We need to see as a country, the same sort of effort and support to productive sectors as well as job creating sectors because you can spend money only if you earn it”, Jagdeo said.
Mr. Jagdeo served as President of Guyana from 1999 to 2011. When he left office in 2011, his PPP remained in office. During its nearly 23 years in government, the PPP was accused of massive spending on projects that did not truly benefit the people of Guyana but were more focused on ensuring kickbacks for supporters of the party.
The party has always denied those allegations.

The Opposition Leader said he fears that the government is too big on spending and that it is “forgetting that after some time if you don’t fix the side that generates the revenue, you will run into great difficulty and this seems to be the philosophy driving the government now”.
The last PPP administration had expended $1 Billion on a failed clean up drive championed by its Ministry of Local government.
When the new government took office, President Granger launched a massive clean up initiative in the city that is being headed by the Georgetown City Council and a National Restoration Committee.
The new initiative is being praised by citizens across the country as the new government seeks to build a new economy.
