Jagdeo fires off at Surujbally over alleged “irregularities”

Former President Bharrat Jagdeo is not impressed with the manner in which the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission has been dealing with complaints of alleged irregularities in Monday’s elections, as expressed by the governing People’s Progressive Party.

At a 2:30am press conference on Tuesday, Jagdeo said Surujbally appears ready to talk about “how good he is” and how good the elections commission is, rather than address the concerns of the PPP.

The PPP is claiming that it has received several reports of multiple voting and persons being disenfranchised. Surujbally dismissed most of those reports although he said the matter will be examined.

The Elections Commission Chairman said it is almost impossible for multiple voting to take place because that would mean collusion between all of the polling agents, all of the party agents and the observers.

But according to Mr. Jagdeo, the PPP has already dispatched a number of emails detailing its reports to the Guyana Elections Commission.

“The majority of GECOM officials acted professionally but we have had incidents in various places and we want these investigated”, Jagdeo said.

“I thought that the Chairman and Mr. Lowenfield would say once the reports come in we will investigate them fully and then make the results public…rather than to hear a long diatribe from the Chairman of GECOM about wonderful they have been, and how perfect the system is and how wonderful he is”.

Jagdeo said he wants to know if Surujbally could “put his neck on a block for any Presiding officer”. The former President said there should have been public vetting of the presiding officers to ensure everything ran smoothly on elections.

“All we ask is that these cases be investigated”.
