"I have a job as General Secretary of the party. Here we have selected a Presidential Candidate. My job as General Secretary of the party is many folds. It is to grow the party and I have said how we will do that is that I have set myself the task of greater inclusion in the party, changing the face of the party, more afro-Guyanese in our party at every level, because we are strongly represented by indo-Guyanese and Amerindians and that's one of my tasks as General Secretary", Jagdeo declared.

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo does not plan to step away from that position anytime soon and has indicated that he takes his job seriously as General Secretary.

In an interview on Saturday just after the PPP elected Irfaan Ali as its Presidential Candidate, Mr. Jagdeo said one of his tasks moving forward will be to change the face of the PPP.

“I have a job as General Secretary of the party. Here we have selected a Presidential Candidate. My job as General Secretary of the party is many folds. It is to grow the party and I have said how we will do that is that I have set myself the task of greater inclusion in the party, changing the face of the party, more afro-Guyanese in our party at every level, because we are strongly represented by indo-Guyanese and Amerindians and that’s one of my tasks as General Secretary”, Jagdeo declared.

The General Secretary who is also a the current Opposition Leader and a former President also told reporters that he will not be taking a back seat in the party. He said he believes his job is to also galvanize the party to win power.

He said he will be working on the party’s campaign strategy for the next elections along with other party members, including the new Presidential Candidate.

Responding to concerns that he could be seen as the person controlling the Presidential Candidate and his position, Jagdeo said “if Anil Nandlall had been selected, they would  have said Nandlall is my puppet…that does not bother me too much. I have had this label before, I was Janet Jagan’s puppet at one time, this does not bother me, but what this does is that it allows a very contentious campaign.”

At a rally last evening to celebrate Irfaan Ali’s selection as the Presidential Candidate, Mr. Jagdeo told Leonora residents that Ali was his first choice for the post and that he worked hard to get him the spot and will work even harder to make him the next President of Guyana.
