With the Opposition Leader still not offering support for the President’s choices for Chancellor and Chief Justice, the opposition PPP is now claiming that Jagdeo would be willing to offer the reasons for his position if asked to do so.

In a statement today, the opposition party said it rejects the contention that the Leader of the Opposition has refused to offer reasons for withholding his agreement to the President’s nominees.

According to the PPP, Mr. Jagdeo is on public record as committing to provide those reasons if he is requested to do so.

At a press conference last week, when asked by the media to provide the reasons for his non-support of the two judges, Jagdeo said he would prefer not to do so at the press conference.

President Granger has said that he will be guided by the advice of his legal advisers. The Constitution requires the agreement of the opposition leader for the appointments to be confirmed. Otherwise, Judges will continue to act in the top two judicial posts.

Meanwhile, the PPP is siding with the Guyana Bar Association that warned earlier this week that any move to go ahead with the appointment without the Opposition Leader’s agreement would be unconstitutional.

The Government has slammed that warning while making it clear that it has no plans to act outside of the constitution.
