Jamaican national pleads guilty to deodorant cocaine charge

A Jamaican national will be sentenced in Guyana on Monday, August 15 for attempting to smuggle 526 grams of cocaine out of the country.

Fifty four-year-old Easton Stapleton was arrested on Wednesday by agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit when he attempted to ship the illegal drugs in several roll-on deodorant bottles through the Post Office.

Suspicion was raised when CANU agents realized the man was shipping the low cost deodorant from Guyana.

The cocaine was neatly concealed in the deodorant bottles which were discovered when the balls were removed.

The unrepresented man pleaded guilty to the charge and volunteered additional information on his failed attempt to ship the drugs. He begged City Magistrate Lerone Daly for leniency.

Stapleton said he had cooperated with CANU agents and was offered a deal but that claim was denied by the Prosecutor who said that it was Stapleton who made the request.

Magistrate Daly listened to Stapleton’s lengthy explanation and in the end, put off the matter until Monday for sentencing.

According to the Laws of Guyana, a person convicted of trafficking narcotics could be fined three times the market value of the narcotics and sentenced to no less than three years and no more than five years in prison for the offence.
