Joint Services in manhunt for double murder accused prison escapee

Double murder accused, Kapildeo Gangadin remains on the run after escaping from the Lusignan Prison this morning.

In a statement, the Prison Service said the man was discovered missing at around 4:00 am and an alarm was immediately raised.

According to prison officials, it is suspected that Gangadin escaped by tampering with the housing unit set up at the prison for quarantine purposes.

The man managed to scale the fence, bypassing tower guards and made his escape through the dumpsite and bushes at the back of the prison.

A joint services search team was immediately activated and a search of the surrounding areas turned up empty-handed.

Prison authorities are said to be embarrassed by the escape and an internal investigation is to be conducted into the lapse of security that allowed the prisoner to escape.

Gangadin was charged a few days ago with the murder of Strathspey youth, Chris Persaud who was stabbed to his chest during a robbery at his father’s business place.

The suspect was arrested the same night with the youth’s gold chain in his possession. He was also charged last week in connection with the murder of a fisherman more than a year ago.

He was on the run for more than a year in connection with that case.

The Guyana Police Force and the Prison Service are asking for anyone who may have information about the whereabouts of the wanted man to make contact with the nearest police station or call 911.
