Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton who opened the budget debates on behalf of the government this morning,  boasted of his Ministry’s achievements in the past year in terms of Labour relations and dealing with issues that affect workers.

During his presentation, Minister Hamilton said a high point of his Ministry’s performance was being able to resolve matters which were raised by aggrieved workers and persons who were owed outstanding payments by their employers.

The Labour Minister claimed that there was no justice for workers under the previous government and that it was under him that a number of matters which were left unsolved were solved.

“Matters that were languishing there since 2016 that they failed to pay attention to, Mr Speaker I can report that in the first year of the People’s Progressive Party Civic government we were able to recoup over $38M for workers that were owed by employees,” Hamilton boasted.

In addition, the Labour Minister reported that there were several incomplete negotiations that were left by the previous government.

“Twenty-two collective labour agreements we were able to broker and meditate in the first year of the People’s Progress Party government. Many of them languishing since 2015, that is the record,” Hamilton said.

The Labour Minister said there were 837 complaints that were filed with the Labour Ministry that have now been closed.

He also noted that the Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency which falls under the Labour Ministry was able to find employment for 186 persons, while 731 names were submitted for employment placement.

The Minister of Labour also announced that a job bank will be launched soon for persons to post their credentials and employers to post vacancies in order to reduce unemployment in Guyana.
