Labourer killed as glass crashes down at Giftland construction site

A young labourer was killed on Wednesday morning while emptying a container of glass at the Giftland Mall construction site at Lilliendaal on the East Coast of Demerara.

The 28-year-old man who has been identified as Jeremy Ames was reportedly among several workers removing imported glass from a container for the building under construction, when several pieces of glass came tumbling down on him.

Several co workers rushed to the man’s aid and had to carefully remove the glass to get to his crushed body. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. It remains unclear whether the man was wearing construction protective gear and a helmet at the time of the deadly incident.

There are reports that he had been working at the construction site for several months. Several efforts to get a comment from the Giftland company proved unsuccessful.
