The political parties and independent candidates competing in today’s local government elections have been encouraging eligible registered voters to ensure they go out and cast their ballots.
The Guyana Elections Commission is reminding voters that the absence of a national ID card cannot prevent a registered elector for casting his ballot.
Public Relations Officer at the Guyana Elections Commission, Yolanda Warde, reminded News Source that once a person is registered and his/her name is on the voters list, that person will be allowed to vote.
She explained that ” for a voter without an ID card, once you have been registered and your name is on the official list of voters, you can still vote. The Commission has put systems in place where there is a folio with key details on the voter along with their photographs so that they can easily be identified. The process is that you cast your ballot as a regular ordinary voter, except that the presiding officer will administer an oath of identity”.
Polling stations opened their doors at 6 o’ clock this morning across the country. Those polling stations will be opened until 6 o’ clock tonight. Ms. Warde said once persons are in line to vote at 6pm, they will be allowed to cast their ballot.
She explained that at the close of poll, the Police officer on duty at the polling station will stand behind the last person in the line.
The Elections Commission has reported that six hours into voting on this local government elections day, the voting process has been moving smoothly across the country, although there are not too many long lines at polling stations.
With 80 local authority areas across the country, there are 80 returning officers and those officers are expected to start providing preliminary results just after 8pm today.
