The border crossing at Lethem and Bom Fim remains closed and there has been no agreement on the reopening of the crossing between Guyana and Brazil.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips in a statement this afternoon shot down suggestions and claims that were being circulated that the crossing had been reopened.

The Prime Minister who is performing the functions of the President said the claims may be intended to create mischief.

In his statement, Prime Minister Phillips assured residents of Region 9 and others who depend on the border crossing that Guyanese and Brazilian authorities remain fully engaged on the issue and are hoping to reach a resolution to the issue as soon as it is safe and reasonable to do so.

The crossing has been closed since March 2020 as the COVID-19 cases soared in neigbouring Brazil.

Although Brazil now has a better handle on its COVID-19 situation, the crossing remains closed with the Guyanese authorities standing firm on the decision because of health concerns.

Last weekend, officials from Guyana and Brazil met and held talks on the issue, but no agreement was reached. Brazilian traders have been protesting the closure of the borders and businessmen in Region 9 have also been expressing their concerns over the situation.
