A businessman from Lethem was arrested on Sunday while smuggling beer from neighbouring Brazil.

The businessman has been identified as Ryan Khan.  He was arrested by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit as he was loading the smuggled beer into his vehicle. He reportedly picked up the smuggled beer from a hidden spot close to the Guyana/Brazilian border.

The suspect and the illegal items were handed over to the Guyana Revenue Authority. He is expected to face charges soon. A total of 251 cases of beer were seized.

The border with Brazil has been closed since March but that has not stopped smugglers from using various illegal crossings and other points to get items across the border.
