Well known Guyanese human rights and LGBT activist, Zenita Nicholson died early this morning after reportedly ingesting a number of carbon tablets.

News Source understands that Nicholson who was also known as Zenita Temall contacted a friend early this morning and cried out for assistance to get to the hospital. It is reported that while on her way to the hospital with the friend, she admitted that she had ingested a number of carbon tablets.

She passed away at a private hospital.

The death has sent shock waves throughout the country as Nicholson was well-known as someone who fought against discrimination and human rights abuses for decades.

She was reportedly going through a number of personal problems and on her Facebook page, she complained “I just can’t believe … I am so numb … so ashamed …so terrified … so disappointed … so shocked and extremely confused!”

Several friends reached out to her about what she may have been going through, but she would only say that she was heading to the police. That was on October 19.

Last year, the US Embassy in Georgetown honoured her as an International Woman of Courage saying that she was courageous in her leadership to ensuring change in the society.

In thanking the U.S Government for its recognition of her work and commitment, Zenita Nicholson who has represented Guyana at a number of international human rights meetings said although she is being honoured for her courage, “I have no courage; not compared to those who inspire me to advocate for equality, human rights and dignity.”
