Residents of Linden and nearby communities will soon be able to apply for and uplift their passports without the hassle of having to travel to Georgetown, as a Passport and Immigration Office is slated to be constructed in Region 10.

Cabinet has already noted the award of a $30.6 million contract to R. Bassoo and Sons for the construction of the facility in 2018.

A sod turning exercise will take place tomorrow.

State Minister Joseph Harmon made the announcement on Friday and said it is part of an ongoing project to decentralize immigration services to all capital towns. Linden has a passport office, but it only accepts renewals.

Meanwhile, Berbice will also be getting its own full passport office and construction has started.

That building is expected to be built under a $57.5 M contract with the M&P Investment Company.

The project has already started and has provided jobs for 25 contractors. The building is expected to be completed in April 2018.

A total of $50M was budgeted for the establishment of two new passport offices in the 2017 budget with more funds set aside in the 2018 budget for the continuation of decentralization of immigration services.
