Linden still to apply for TV License

Linden still to apply for TV License

Officials from the Linden community are still to apply for a television broadcasting license according to the Chairperson of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority, Bibi Shadick.

Ms. Shadick said an official from the community had uplifted an application form from the GNBA, but the application is still to be returned. She told a media conference on Thursday that based on what she read in the newspapers, the community leaders were in the process of setting up a Trust for the management of the television station. She said that is as much as she knows on the issue. The GNBA Chairperson had stated earlier in the year that she would have given priority to Linden’s application.

The granting of a broadcast license to the community of Linden was one of the agreements hammered out as part of the dialogue between the Government and Region 10 officials.

Region 10 Chairman Sharma Solomon recently told News Source that the community was in the process of setting up a trust for the television station since the Regional council would not be able to manage the tv station since it cannot be granted a license under the law. Licenses could only be granted to companies or trusts.

Solomon said a number of persons have been consulted for positions on the Trust. News Source understands that a number of overseas based Lindeners have expressed an interest in forming part of an investment team for the Linden TV station. Currently, Linden has two television stations. Both are managed by the state-owned National Communications Network.
