Lockdown curfew in Linden begins Saturday; Citizens can’t leave homes after 8 pm

The town of Linden and surrounding communities in Region Ten will go into lockdown mode from this weekend when a curfew is instituted. The move is part of the region’s efforts to cut back on social gatherings in wake of the coronavirus.

In a statement from the Linden Town Council, it was announced that the Region has made a decision that with effect from this Saturday all businesses in the town must be closed from 6 pm to 6 am. Only pharmacies and supermarkets will be allowed to keep their doors open up to 7 pm.

Residents across the region will be prohibited from being out in the streets after 8 pm for the next two weeks.

Only those working with essential services like the Police, Military, Healthcare, and utilities (water and light) will be allowed out of their homes after 8 pm. Others who disobey the curfew could find themselves facing detention by the Police.

The Regional Officials are directing food businesses to only offer take out and delivery services during the curfew. Dining services are being prohibited completely.

Linden is the second largest town in Guyana with a population of just over 30,000. Officials in the town and the rest of the region decided to institute strict measures after becoming worried that the national guidelines were being ignored.

The region has also set up its own coronavirus hotline. Persons with concerns about the virus or symptoms could call 444-6127, 444-6137, 231-1166 or 226-7480.
