Lusignan men charged for murder of teenage taxi driver

Two Lusignan men,  Asas Alli and Abool Shazin Razak were on Tuesday morning remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate (ag) Priya Beharry after they were charged with the murder of 17-year-old taxi driver, Dhanraj Latchman.

The two were not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge but appeared calm as they appeared before the Magistrate. The Prosecution’s case is that last Wednesday, June 11, 2014, the two men hired Latchman to take them to Parika. The young taxi driver never returned home and his family reported him missing. At first the two men, reportedly claimed that there was a kidnapping and that the young man was taken hostage.

But last Friday, Police investigators were able to get the two to confess to murdering the taxi driver.  Investigators were told by the two, that they used the seatbelt in the car to strangle the young man to death.

The two men took investigators to the Parika Backdam where the battered body of the taxi driver was found in a farming field. Investigators believe he was killed on the same day that the two hired him to take them to Parika. A motive for the killing is not known. The duo is expected to make their next court appearance later this month at Leonora.
