At least 18 prisoners of the Lusignan Prison were injured on Friday as they scaled the fence of one holding area, in an effort to attack another prisoner, who they had accused of being an informant.

Prison officers were forced to fire warning shots in the air to get the prisoners to retreat. The injuries sustained by the prisoners came from the razor wire that is attached to the fence. Five of them were sent to the Georgetown Hospital for treatment because their injuries appeared serious.

The five prisoners who were taken to the hospital have been identified as Linden Lewis, Abdul Akeem, Anthony Joseph, Travis Sobers and Adrian Edwards.

The prisoner, who was being targeted, was unharmed and has since been moved to another section of the prison.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.  The security situation at the temporary holding facilities at Lusignan has created a headache for prison officers, who have found themselves constantly breaking up fights. The two holding areas are large fenced sheds and not prison cells. Many of the prisoners being housed there are remand prisoners.

A few weeks ago, 13 prisoners dug their way out of the Lusignan compound. One remain at large, along with the other three who escaped from the Camp Street jail in early July.
