Mahdia businessman gunned down

A Brazilian national who operated a money changing and gold trading business at Mahdia in Region 8 was shot dead on Wednesday evening in his shop during a robbery by a number of gunmen.

Reports out of Mahdia indicate that the gunmen escaped with a large sum of money and fired several shots in the air as they made their escape. It is believed they also made off with a large quantity of gold.

The name of the dead shop owner has not been released.

A resident in the community told News Source that loud gunshots were heard just after 7 pm and it was only then that persons realized that a robbery was being committed. Police were called to the scene but the men had already made good their escape.

The businessman was well known to miners in the community and would transact millions of dollars in money transfers and gold trading daily.

A police investigation is underway.
