Majority of Lusignan Prison escapees were facing murder and robbery charges

Nine of the escapees were behind bars on murder charges while others were charged in connection with robbery and gun related charges. It is suspected that the prisoners may have dug a hole under the prison fence and were able to make their escape at nightfall.

As a massive manhunt continues for the 13 men who escaped from the Lusignan Prison between last night and this morning, more details are emerging about the crimes that they may have committed.

Nine of the escapees were behind bars on murder charges while others were charged in connection with robbery and gun related charges. It is suspected that the prisoners may have dug a hole under the prison fence and were able to make their escape at nightfall.

The Department of Public Information has announced that the Prison Director and other Security Officials will brief the media later this morning.  The Department of Public Information has also announced that a massive manhunt has started as investigations into how the men may have escaped with out notice, takes place simultaneously.

The public is being advised to take all necessary precautions and report all suspicious activities to the nearest police station or outpost.

Members of the public are also being asked to avoid the lower East Coast Demerara backlands until further notice and to remain calm but vigilant.  Persons are also being encouraged to report any suspicious activities or persons that may be in their communities.

The Lusignan Prison was being used to house hundreds of additional prisoners who were moved from the Camp Street jail following that fire that destroyed most of that facility and facilitated a jail break three weeks ago.
