The 22-year-old, wheelchair bound man who was on remand for the shooting death of a Durban Street restaurant waitress, was found motionless at the Lusignan prison this morning, and pronounced dead shortly after.
According to reports, Shelton George aka “Boorie” was found motionless in one of the cells at the prison facility. He was rushed to the hospital by prison officers. It was just after 6 o’ clock this morning when he was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Hospital.
Director of Prison, Gladwin Samuels, told News Source that the man appeared well up to yesterday, according to relatives, who saw him at Court. The Prison Director said although he was wheelchair bound, he was able to do a lot of things for himself and had an orderly assigned to him to render assistance.
George was charged earlier this year for the 2014 murder of waitress Debra Blackman.He had been on the run until he was found in a paralyzed state this year, when he was arrested.
He was reportedly left paralyzed after being shot in neighbouring Suriname and has been bound to a wheel chair since then.
The Prosecution’s case was that George shot and killed Debra Blackman on the August 23, 2014 at her place of work. Investigators are convinced that he was the same man caught on surveillance video, shooting the woman and escaping from the scene.
It is believed that he later traveled to Suriname where he went into hiding but was shot by another Guyanese man during a confrontation and was left crippled.
Acting on information received, Police ranks found the man at his mother’s Better Hope house. The woman claims that her son is not the same person who shot the waitress to death.
He was also charged for the attempted murder of Muhammed Azeez.
He was accused of discharging a loaded firearm causing harm to the Azeez,who was left bed ridden as a result of the 2015 incident.
An investigation has been launched into the prisoner’s death.
