Man busted at airport with 27 lbs cocaine in rice and flour

He is not known to be chef, but a 31-year-old Guyanese man was busted at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on Tuesday afternoon with what he thought were the right ingredients to get cocaine out of the country.

The man, whose name has not been released, was about to board a Dynamic Airways non-stop flight to New York when agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit carried out a search of his bags and discovered just over 27 pounds of cocaine stashed in packets of rice and flour.

The Guyanese man was immediately arrested and taken into custody by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit. Up to late Tuesday night he was being grilled about the cocaine and the persons who may have supplied him with the illegal substance.

CANU investigators are moving to impose drug trafficking charges against him before the end of the week. The latest drug bust came just one day after two security officers attached to the Cheddi Jagan Airport appeared in court and were denied bail after they were charged for facilitating the passage of cocaine through the airport.

Over the past two months, there have been a number of drug busts in the United States of passengers who had travelled from Guyana. The Cheddi Jagan International Airport has been making moves to step up the security situation at the main international airport in the country.
