Man shot dead outside Camp Street jail during attempt to attack Policeman

An unidentified man was on Friday night shot dead outside the Camp Street prison by a Police officer after he reportedly attempted to attack the officer.

According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force, it was just before midnight on Friday that the man appeared close to the Police security location outside the prison and started to behave disorderly.

He was initially taken away for questioning by a Police patrol, but returned to the prison location just after being released and started to issue threats against the police and other security officers outside the prison. He threw down steel barriers and continued with his disorderly behaviour, the Police Force said.

The Police Force statement said that it was at that stage that a police constable who was armed with a service weapon and under the supervision of a subordinate officer, approached the unarmed man.

The man allegedly then attacked the rank and in the process, the Constable discharged a round, which struck the man in the lower abdomen.

He was immediately rushed to the GPHC and died while receiving treatment.

An investigation has been launched into the incident and the Guyana Police Force Office of Professional Responsibility is also conducting its own probe.

The Joint Services have been maintaining a strong security presence outside the country’s main jailhouse, since the prison riot which took place back in March.  The additional security outside the prison is also an attempt to curb efforts of illegal items being hurled over the prison fence by passersby.
