The Guyana Police Force on Wednesday announced that 48-year-old Robert Sandy of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, who was in custody for the stabbing death of his 18-year-old girlfriend, died on Wednesday at the New Amsterdam Prison.
The release from the Police Press Officer did not give a cause of death.

Sandy was charged with the murder of 18-year-old Onika Greaves which occurred on May 19, 2014. He appeared in court on Tuesday May 27 and was remanded to prison until June 09, 2014.

Just after the woman’s murder, Sandy was hospitalised under police guard after it was suspected that he may have consumed a poisonous substance. He was discharged from the hospital on Monday and taken to court on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old man and his teenaged lover were in a relationship for just over a year and their union produced a child four months ago. According to relatives of the dead woman, earlier this month, she decided that she no longer wanted to remain in the relationship but Sandy became angry and started to issue threats.
She was stabbed to death in her mother’s yard, moments after she returned to the Berbice area from Georgetown. Her mother told News Source at the time of the young woman’s death, that the two shared a good relationship and the man only started to issue threats when her daughter decided that she wanted to be with someone else and walked away from the relationship.
