Man who tested positive for H1N1 after China trip dies overseas

Public Health Minister Dr. George Norton has confirmed the death of the male patient who was initially monitored at a local private hospital before he was flown out of Guyana for treatment after testing positive for the swine flu.

Dr. Norton told News Source earlier today that he was informed by the Chief Medical Officer that the patient had died.

The man returned to Guyana from a business trip in China and stopped in the US and Trinidad and Tobago on his way here.

Trinidad has reported several cases of the swine flu.

According to health officials familiar with the case, the man did not display any symptoms of the virus on his way back to Guyana from China.

He only fell ill after arriving in Guyana.

The Ministry of Health announced this week that the medical team that treated the man as well as his relatives were being monitored.

The Health Minister has since announced that vaccines have arrived in Guyana to treat any other case of the flu.

According to local health officials, the swine flu can only be transmitted if an infected person coughs or sneezes and thus releasing the virus infected particles into the air.

The Ministry of Health has tightened its surveillance security system at the main ports of entry in the country, primarily at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) and the Ogle International Airport.

Symptoms of the H1N1 virus include coughing, fever, sore throat, body aches and headaches.
