McCoy denies physical assault of Opposition MP

Following the filing of a Police complaint by Opposition Member of Parliament Tabitha Sarabo-Halley that she was physically assaulted by Government Minister Kwame McCoy, the Minister has denied the allegation.

In a statement last evening, McCoy admitted that there was an “exchange of words” between him and Sarabo-Halley, but said there was no physical assault.

“I emphatically and completely deny that I assaulted Ms. Halley as she has alleged or at all. At no time did I touch Ms. Halley with my phone or any part of my body’, the Minister noted.

According to McCoy, he was outside the Parliamentary Chamber and had just had a verbal exchange with the Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield when he observed the Opposition MP nearby.

“I began to speak with Minister Anand Persaud. I observed the presence of Ms. Halley, who was approximately four feet away from me. We exchanged words, but there was absolutely no physical contact whatsoever. Minister Persaud was present with me at all material time”, he said.

McCoy claims that the entire incident was witnessed by Minister Persaud.

But the Opposition MP Tabitha Sarabo-Halley said she was on her way to the washroom when she noticed McCoy in a confrontation. She said he turned his attention to her and started to use his phone to take pictures of her. Sarabo-Halley said she she raised her hand to block her face, McCoy pushed aside her hands and hit her to he head with his phone.

She said she immediately informed the Opposition Leader and the Clerk of the National Assembly about the incident.

A Police report was filed.
