Mediation begins between Health Minister and GPHC Chairman over reinstatement of CEO

Mediation between Health Minister Dr. George Norton and Board Chairman of the Georgetown Public Hospital, Dr Carl Max Hanoman has started and is expected to put an end to the impasse between the two over the reinstatement of the Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Hospital.

Attorney General Basil Williams was appointed by Cabinet last week as the mediator to intervene and make recommendations to resolve issues between the Ministry of Public Health and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The Attorney General is expected to submit his report within one week of the commencement of the process.

Addressing media operatives last week, the Minister of State reported that, during Cabinet’s last meeting, Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton briefed members on the state of affairs at the GPHC.

Among the issues raised were the relationship between the subject Minister and the Board of Directors of the Corporation resulting from the decision of the Board of Directors to re-instate the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Michael Khan who had been previously sent on administrative leave to facilitate a forensic audit of the institution.

The findings of the audit, based on the view of the Board, had cleared Khan of allegations of wrongdoing.

But the Health Minister believes there is enough evidence in the audit to deprive Khan of further employment.

Having listened and deliberated on the issues put forward by the Public Health Minister, Cabinet then decided to intervene and appoint the Attorney General, as a mediator to query into all issues raised in the report by Dr. Norton.

Khan will remain on the job until the report is submitted to Cabinet.
