The People’s Progressive Party maintains that the Guyana Elections Commission needs to move immediately to a claims and objections period and not merge the information from house-to-house registration to the current National Register of Registrants.

At his weekly press conference today, Opposition Leader and PPP General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo, the merging process could further delay elections and throw the elections all the way into next year.

“With this merger, the most optimistic scenario is to go to claims and objections in November because the merger will take about three months and then elections on the 27th April next year.”

The Opposition Leader maintains that there will be no improvement in the database from the merger.

He said based on the numbers that have been registered so far during the house-to-house exercise, he believes there could be no more than 2000 new registrants who were not on the previous list. He said it is only time that will be taken up during the merger exercise.

“This merger will not improve the database. It is a delaying tactic once again. It will not improve the database because if you don’t merge the data a simpler way of capturing all these people by getting the 2000 who have registered of the 285,000”, Jagdeo said.

While the PPP has welcomed the GECOM Chairman’s decision to end house-to-house registration, it has been expressing its disappointment in her decision not to scrap the information taken during the process and move on to claims and objections.
