Miner dies after mining pit caves in at interior location

An investigation has been launched into the death of another miner in the mining community. The Guyana Police Force is reporting that 32-year-old miner Rocklyn Solomon, of Paradise Village, WCB, died just after 12 o’clock on Thursday afternoon when a pit he was working in, caved in and buried him alive.

The incident took place at Princeville, Potaro River.

The young man’s body was pulled from beneath the soil but he was unconscious. He was hurried to the mahdia hospital where doctors pronounced dead on arrival.

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission is also investigating the incident. There have been calls for safer mining practices. Earlier this year, two other miners lost their lives when a pit they were working in also caved in and buried them alive.
