With the United Kingdom and the United States already administering one of the coronavirus vaccines, Guyana has started moves to expand its capacity to store the vaccines whenever they become available.

Some of the vaccines have to be stored in -70 degree temperatures. The country currently does not have such storage facilities, but Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony revealed today that the process has started to acquire the special freezers.

The Health Minister also revealed today that a number of storage facilities across the country will be expanded for the eventual rollout of the coronavirus vaccines.

Minister Anthony said he is confident that all systems will be in place by mid-January.

Guyana is acquiring its COVID-19 vaccines through the UN supported COVAX programme which will be putting a special system in place for the acquisition of the COVID vaccines for developing countries.

Initially, countries are expected to receive enough vaccines to cover 20%. of their population.

The Health Ministry has also announced that once the vaccine reaches Guyana, Health Care workers will be the first to receive their shot.
