Miss World-Guyana launches One Act mental health campaign
Miss World Guyana, Nuriyyih Gerrard on Friday launched her Beauty with a Purpose and Awareness Campaign for the international leg of the pageant which will take place on December 20th in Washington D.C.
Ms. Gerrard is using her influence as a beauty ambassador to pursue change in the area of mental health, as attempts are being made to reverse Guyana’s reputation as the suicide capital of the world.
Fighting back tears, Gerrard called on all Guyanese to stop talking change and do more to actively pursue the change Guyana desperately needs in the area of mental health.
She used the occasion to reflect on her childhood experiences and believes that her story is a personal testimony to help her engender the change.
With a focus on youth, Gerrard and her team have launched the One Act Foundation which is now pioneering the THRIVE Project which aims to reduce stigma associated with mental illness and enhance the mental health well-being of youths.
The THRIVE Project will engage 30 young persons during a three day camp, between August 29 and 31 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, helping to improve youth awareness of mental health.
On September 4th, there will be a boat cruise in New York followed by the opening of a recreational park in Berbice on September 23rd.
The One Act Foundation also plans to carry out Rehabilitation Work at the Psychiatric Hospital.
The  Foundation is seeking funding to implement its targeted and successful mental wellness and awareness campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Gerrard said a mobile app will also be created which will aid in the effort to provide guidance to youths throughout Guyana.
The App will, among other things, provide teens and other young people with a basic introduction to mental health and ways of influencing change and caring.
