Guyana recorded 90 new cases of Coronavirus in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of new cases recorded since the start of January to 1,114 according to Ministry of Health figures.
Of the 90 new cases recorded as of midnight Wednesday, 66 are from Region 4.
The majority of new cases recorded so far for the year are from Region 4, which continues to see the most flouting of the Coronavirus regulations.
The figures released by the Ministry of Health today also revealed that there are seven persons in the Coronavirus Intensive Care Unit and the total number of active cases stands at 754.
Figures obtained by News Source on the 175 COVID-19 related deaths that have been recorded in Guyana reveals that more than 50% of the deaths are from Region 4.
According to the statistics, Region Four has recorded 93 of the 175 Coronavirus related deaths.
Region 1 has recorded the second highest number of deaths with 29 deaths on record, followed by Region 7 with 13 deaths, Regions 3, 6 and 10 with 8 deaths each, Regions 2 and 9 with 4 deaths each, while Region 5 has recorded 5 deaths and there have been 3 deaths in Region 8.
As the number of Coronavirus cases continue to climb in the country and the vaccines are not likely to get here until after March, there are calls for stricter enforcement of the COVID-19 regulations and a possible lockdown to stem the spread.
A lockdown is unlikely as the Government has been pushing to balance the need to safeguard the population with the need for business to continue but with precautions.
Many Government agencies are returning to their regular working hours schedule, with the rotation system in many agencies being discontinued.
