Murder rate down, Robberies up in November
The Guyana Police Force has released its monthly statistics on the crime situation in the country. The report has found that the murder rate is down while cases of robberies continue to rise.
For  11 months of the year, a total of 127 murders were recorded in comparison to 133 murders for the same period in 2013, a decrease of 5%.
The Police report also said that at the end of November 2014, cases of robbery under arms had increased overall by 6% in comparison to the same period in 2013.
“The statistics indicate an increase of 10% in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms; and a 2% decrease in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators”, the report found.
In relation to traffic, 130 road fatalities from 121 accidents have been recorded at the end of November 2014 in comparison to 100 fatalities from 92 accidents for the same period in 2013. That figure represents a troubling 32% increase in fatalities.
Of the 130 road fatalities,  57 were pedestrians. The Police Force said speeding continues to be a major contributing factor to fatal accidents and was the cause of 75 of the 121 fatal accidents recorded at the end of November 2014.
