Nandlall and Jonas to be elevated to Senior Counsel

The Office of the President has announced that after consultation with Chancellor of the Judiciary Yonette Cummings, President Irfaan Ali has decided to appoint Attorney General Anil Nandlall and Attorney Timothy Jonas to the rank of Senior Counsel.

In a statement, the President’s office said the appointment will officially take place on Friday.

According to the Office of the President, the two are being promoted due to their knowledge of and learning in the law and on account of their diligence in the practice of the law in addition to their contributions to the growth and development of Guyana’s jurisprudence and constitutional democracy.

Earlier this year, Jonas had filed Court action against some Senior Counsel appointments by former President David Granger.

In response to that challenge, Attorney General Anil Nandlall had indicated that the appointments by former President Granger were in fact properly done and Jonas’ case was therefore without merit.

The matter is still before the Courts, but it is unclear whether it will remain there now that Timothy Jonas is being elevated to Senior Counsel.
