Guyana’s Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan has announced that the National Budget will be presented to the National Assembly on Monday, August 10.

This will be the first budget to be presented since the change of government following the May 11, 2015 regional and general elections.

Jordan made the announcement this afternoon during a presentation to the National Assembly. He did not offer any preview of the budget but multiple government sources have indicated that several initiatives are to be announced that should be of benefit to the Guyanese people.

Among the issues that are expected to be highlighted in the budget, would be a move to lower the toll for the Berbice River Bridge and the removal of the value added tax from a number of food items.

The Government is also expected to lay out its infrastructural and development plans for the country while highlighting efforts to safeguard the sugar and rice industries.

The Opposition, People’s Progressive Party which has not been to parliament since being booted out of government, has announced that it intends to head back to the National Assembly in time for the budget.

Last week the PPP accepted an invitation to be part of consultations on the budget. The party later sent a letter to the Finance Minister with several projects from its manifesto that it wants to see incorporated in the upcoming budget.
