New Chief Election Officer to be sworn in on Tuesday

The newly selected Chief Election Officer at the Guyana Elections Commission Vishnu Persaud will start his new job tomorrow, when he will be administered the oath of office.

Persaud was selected on Friday by a majority decision when the Guyana Elections Commission met to consider the final two applicants for the GECOM post.

Mr. Persaud, who previously worked at GECOM in various capacities for 17 years, was able to pick up the full support of the GECOM Chairman and the PPP Government Commissioners while the Opposition nominated members of the Commission backed the other candidate, a Jamaican election official.

The opposition nominated commissioners have distanced themselves from the hiring of Vishnu Persaud. They maintain their position that Persaud remains unqualified and unsuitable for the position in keeping with the requirements for the job that were published by the Commission.

The Chairman of GECOM Justice Claudette Singh has defended her decision to cast her deciding vote in favour of Persaud.

She said she believes that with his experience over the years that he worked at GECOM, he would be able to do the job.

The GECOM Chair has been accused by the Opposition Commissioners of shifting the goal post with the requirements for the job to allow the hiring of Persaud.
