No Change in APNU’s support for No Confidence motion

The main opposition group, A Partnership for National Unity has reiterated its support for the “No Confidence” motion against the People’s Progressive Party Civic administration. The motion has been put forward by the Alliance For Change.

In a Wednesday afternoon statement, the APNU said that “it has committed itself to supporting the ‘No Confidence’ motion against the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration. There is NO CHANGE from that position”

The party said it wants to state clearly that “our call for His Excellency, President Donald Ramotar to name a date and set the machinery in place for the holding of local government elections is in no way contradictory, but rather complimentary of our stated position regarding local democracy and respect for the Constitution of Guyana”.

According to the APNU, “after 20 years of a total neglect and destruction of our local democratic organs, the people of Guyana are entitled to know when local government elections will be held and local democracy restored”.

On Tuesday, the Leader of the Opposition David Granger issued an ultimatum to President Donald Ramotar for the announcement of a date for the hosting of Local Government Elections.

In a strongly toned letter dated 9th September, 2014, Mr. Granger reminded the President of the need for Local Government Elections which have not been held since 1994 and called on the President to announce a date for those elections by next Monday.

“We call on you, therefore, on or before Monday 2014.09.15, to announce the date for local government elections to be held countrywide; to issue the ‘Commencement Order’ to operationalise the Local Government Commission and to initiate a process by which the Local Government (Amendment) Bill could be returned for your assent”, the letter to the President stated.

The President is yet to respond to the Granger letter and the Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon on Wednesday indicated that he believes the Opposition Leader may be employing a political strategy.
