The Guyana Police Force has not so far found any evidence linking recent robberies and other gun crimes to licensed firearms that may have been rented.

During the presentation of the Force’s plans for the Christmas holidays, News Source questioned the Police Commissioner and the Crime Chief on the statistics that could show criminal activities being linked to rented licensed firearms.

They had no stats to show, but the Crime Chief however, pointed out that there is one murder case currently being investigated that involves a licensed firearm that was used to commit the crime by someone who was not the owner.

He was quick to point out that in that case, the gun was stolen.

The Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud explained that the Police Force would have to manually compare the ballistics of guns used at crime scenes and with thousands of ballistics records, it would have to have specific information about a specific licensed firearm to seek a match.

“Because it is a manual procedure, we only go with information that surface…the evidence might be there but we have not found it”, the Commissioner said.

Just recently President David Granger said he would like to see a slow down in the issuance of licensed firearms because he believes some licensed firearm holders are renting the guns. He did not provide any evidence or information to back up his claim.

The statement has garnered widespread criticism from the members of the public who believe that once private citizens are qualified to have a licensed firearm to protect himself, the license ought to be granted.
