No new cases of COVID-19; Concerns raised over interior locations

With seven of the recorded coronavirus cases in Guyana coming from the Region Seven area, the Public Health Ministry is concerned about the possible spread of the disease in the mining community.

No new cases of the coronavirus were recorded over the past 24 hours but in today’s health report, Dr. Ertensia Hamilton of the Ministry of Public Health urged residents and miners from the interior locations to ensure they strictly follow the health guidelines and safeguard themselves from COVID-19.

“At the time when the curfew was instituted, there were only 5 Regions with positive cases since then another two regions have been added to this list. The Ministry remains concerned with the increased cases seen especially in Region 7 (Cuyuni- Mazaruni) taking into consideration that the mining communities have a lot of traffic and with this movement we can have a wider spread of this disease. So, we urge residents to follow the guidelines provided”.

Dr. Hamilton said persons who may have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for the coronavirus should contact the health authorites to have tests done.

Over the past weeks, Health officials have been complaining about some of the persons who have tested positive refusing to provide information about their contacts.

Meanwhile, mobile testing units continue to be moved around the country.

“The Mobile Unit will continue to visit different locations across the country. Our next scheduled visits are to Cornelia Ida in Region # 3 and Diamond in Region #4. We are pleased to announce that the mobile team is currently at La Parfaite Harmonie and will extend the services for one more day which is tomorrow Saturday 23rd May, 2020.”

There are currently 60 active cases of the coronavirus in Guyana. 57 persons have made full recoveries and a total of 10 deaths have been recorded.
