No trace of US$5M paid for GTT shares under PPP government

The Government of Guyana is trying to figure out exactly who may have collected US$5 Million under the former PPP Civic government for the Government shares in GT&T that were sold to a Chinese company.

Minister of State, Joe Harmon and an official from the government’s holding company, NICIL, recently travelled to China to settle the payment for the shares only to be provided with documentation that indicated that the money had already been paid over to Guyana under the previous government.

News Source understands that NICIL has no record of ever receiving the money and the previous government had indicated on several occasions that money was still owed.

Based on the documents now in the possession of the Guyana government, a full probe was launched into the issue.

Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, at a press conference this afternoon, confirmed that the issue is being addressed.

He said “Mr. Harmon has provided a full report on the matter and the NICIL board is considering the findings. And that will be made public shortly. What I can say is that Mr. Harmon has been able to retrieve some documents which tell a different story and that story being that the $5 million was paid and we are trying to track down to who, when and where and that was before May 16, 2015.”
