Candidate for Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Aubrey Norton has rubbished a suggestion that the party’s long overdue biennial delegates congress slated for this Saturday could be postponed.

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) last week agreed to have, the Chief Elections Officer for the Congress, Vincent Alexander, conduct a review to determine whether all systems have been put in place for the smooth running of the congress.

This comes after PNCR Vice-Chair, Annette Ferguson, who has publicly backed Joe Harmon for leader moved a motion for the congress to be postponed.

In an interview with News Source today, Mr. Norton said he is not bothered by the speculations and he said he is confident that the Congress will go on as planned this weekend.

“I don’t know that the CEC has taken a decision to postpone Congress, and as far as I know the Congress will go on as planned. Our party comrades need this election to be over with. This Congress has been long overdue and our people need to get this over with and move on” Mr. Norton told News Source.

Asked whether he is concerned that Mr. Alexander, who is scheduled to submit his report tomorrow might recommend that the Congress be put off until next March, Mr. Norton said while he does not want to comment specifically on the work Mr. Alexander is doing he believes that the required systems are in place to pull off a free and fair delegates congress.

The frontrunner for the leadership position, who has been picking up endorsements from critical PNCR groups across the country and in the diaspora is of the firm belief that the move to have the Congress postpone is a move by some candidates to buy time.

“Some candidates are now trying to pick up momentum for their campaign, so the talk about the postponement of congress is for them to buy time,” Norton declared.

Norton has long set himself out as the person to beat when the elections are held and already, he has received the backing of several longstanding party members.

When the elections are held, Norton will go up against, Opposition Leader Joe Harmon, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, and former Attorney General Basil Williams for the position of Party Leader.
