One dead in East Bank smash-up

The driver of a Route 42 mini-bus, which plies the Georgetown/Timehri route, lost his life in an early Friday morning smash up at New Hope on the East Bank of Demerara. The dead driver has been identified as 59-year-old Oswald Roberts of Kuru Kururu.

The accident occurred just after 6:30 this morning.

The mini-bus was heading to Georgetown when a 4×4 pick-up heading in the opposite direction veered into the lane of the mini-bus, causing the head-on collision.

Several passengers of the bus along with the driver and conductor had to be pulled out of the mangled wreck and taken to the hospital. Several public-spirited citizens offered assistance as traffic on both sides was backed up for almost a mile.

Persons at the scene of the crash said the driver of the 4×4 pick-up appeared to have been under the influence of alcohol. They said the smell of alcohol was all over his breath as they sought to render assistance.

Other drivers said the pick-up was seen speeding and swaying along the roadway moments before the crash.

The injured persons were rushed to the Diamond Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Hospital. At least three of them were rushed off for emergency surgeries.

The Guyana Police Force is investigating the accident.
