The Ministry of Public Security has announced that it is moving ahead with its one month gun amnesty programme and is encouraging holders of illegal firearms, ammunition or explosives to take advantage of the amnesty.
In full-page ads in the daily newspapers, the Ministry said it remains concerned about the high number of illegal guns in the country and the impact on the nation’s security.
According to the Ministry, persons in possession of illegal and unlicensed weapons have one month to hand those weapons over to the police without the worry of being charged or questioned.
According to the Ministry, “all transactions conducted in relation to this specific amnesty period will be treated with strict confidentiality”.
However, the Public Security Ministry warns that persons who are found in possession of illegal firearms, ammunition or explosives after the one month period, will face the full force of the law.
Collection centres have been set up at police stations in all of the divisions and will operate from 8:00am to 4:00pm daily.
Last Friday, the Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan said the administration is keen to ensure the reduction in the crime statistics. He however, noted that it is not an overnight job. He said solving the crime problem in Guyana is more like a test cricket match and not a 20/20 game.
Guyana has recorded over 100 murders for this year already and cases of armed robberies have seen a decline while other serious crimes are on the increase.
