The Opposition APNU+AFC has given the Clerk of the National Assembly a 24-hour ultimatum to provide a copy of the citizenship renunciation certificate for Tourism Minister Oneidge Waldron.

The Opposition has warned that the Clerk’s failure to do so will result in the commencement of legal proceedings.

In a letter to the Clerk of the National Assembly on behalf of the Opposition Leader, APNU+AFC Member of Parliament, Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde chided the Clerk for ignoring an earlier request by the Opposition Chief Whip for the document to be provided.

The Tourism Minister has admitted that she was a dual citizen at the time of her appointment as a Minister of Government, but she has claimed that by the time she was sworn in as a Member of Parliament, her renunciation was completed.

The Opposition is not buying her story and believes that she was a dual citizen at the time of her swearing in. Under the Guyana Constitution, Members of Parliament must not have dual citizenship.

Senior Counsel Forde in his letter to the Clerk said the APNU+AFC coalition is of the view that Ms. Oneidge Waldrond is now unlawfully a member of the National Assembly and it ought to so be declared.

The Opposition party added that it is untenable for the Opposition not to be provided with the information that it requested, adding that the inaction by the Speaker and the Clerk on the “unconstitutional appointment”, is unacceptable and constitutes a violation by the two to uphold the law.

Just recently, President Irfaan Ali said he believes that the Minister’s renunciation of her US citizenship came before her swearing-in as a Member of the National Assembly.

Just before the opening of the National Assembly, the Clerk had written to the parties requesting that those members who were dual citizens provide proof of their renunciation. The Tourism Minister only provided her documents after information became public two weeks ago that she might still be holding on dual citizenship.
