Opposition heckles Health Minister as he apologises to National Assembly over inaccurate statements

A remorseful Health Minister, Dr. George Norton stood before the National Assembly on Thursday to apologize for “inaccurate statements” that he had provided to the National Assembly.

Dr. Norton said he takes full responsibility for the misinformation but insisted the inaccurate answers he provided to the House were based on information supplied to him.

His apology was met with loud heckling from the opposition benches.

The controversy which already led the Minister to apologize to the nation erupted back in August 2016 when the Opposition grilled Norton on the government’s move to rent a building for a storage bond facility at the price of $12.5 million per month.

“Since August 8th I have come to the firm position that the answers given to two questions relating to the payment New GPC Inc and the storage of drugs in the bond were inaccurate,” he said.

The Minister said in the circumstances he wished to express his profound regret to the President, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister, his parliamentary colleagues on the government side and the parliamentary opposition.

Norton said he was also sorry for all those who observed the process of consideration of estimates.

“As Minister of Public Health I know that a high standard of duty is expected of me and take full responsibility for the unfortunate episode and give my full commitment that it will not recur,” he added.
