Opposition Leader needs to be clear on whether he will attend meeting with the President -says State Minister

Minister of State, Joe Harmon, believes that the Opposition Leader needs to be clear on whether he will attend or not attend the meeting with President David Granger next Wednesday.

Minister Harmon made the statement last evening in response to the Opposition Leader’s new position that he will only be attending the meeting if an election date is on the agenda.

The President’s Office listed elections preparations and funding for the elections as one of two agenda items.

In his statement last evening, the State Minister said “We have always said that the President is prepared to engage with the Leader of the Opposition on any matter of national interest. We consider this to be one such matter and therefore that is why the President invited him. So it is our hope that after mature consideration, the Leader of the Opposition will change that stance which he has taken today and attend the meeting,”

The Opposition Leader has been pressing for elections to be held in March, saying that his party will not vote along with the Government for an extension. The Elections Commission has already made it clear that it would be impossible for elections to take place in this new month.

Earlier this week, President Granger dispatched two letters to the Guyana Elections Commission Chairman. One of the letters urged the Elections Commission to begin preparations for elections, while the other invited the Chairman to have consultations with the President on the elections.

The Opposition Leader had claimed that the two letters were the same and he accused the President of fraud. It was an accusation that the government did not take lightly.

Minister Harmon in response said “I have never heard anyone level such an accusation against President David Arthur Granger, a Christian man, who espouses and practices Christian values, who understands the Bible and while this gentleman today has been talking about the Bible, I really do wonder if he has ever read the Bible because if you were to accuse the President of fraud, what you are saying is that the President deliberately…in fact if you were to check on the definition of fraud, there are several definitions… but the ordinary usage of the word ‘fraud’ means that it is an act of deceiving or misrepresenting. Now this is what the Leader of the Opposition is seeking to say, that the President did after two letters were released that were addressed to the Chairman of GECOM, not to Mr. Jagdeo.”
