Opposition MP denies sexual assault allegations involving minor

Member of Parliament (MP) for the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Alister Charlie, has denied allegations of attempted rape of a minor sometime last week.

The issue was first reported in the Kaieteur News and the Guyana Chronicle on August 2. It was reported that the incident allegedly occurred in Lethem, Region nine.

However, the opposition MP on Tuesday refuted the allegations which he described as “false”.

“I, Alister Charlie, MP for Region nine, hereby totally reject the false allegations that have been made of me as reported in the Guyana Chronicle and other media sources,” Charlie said in a statement to the media.

He further contended that the allegation appears to be “a conspiracy” that targets his character and political affiliation, based on the treatment he received from the Police the day before the article was published.

“As a result of these allegations hatched to sully my name and reputation, I am in consultation with my lawyer with regard to bringing legal action against those who participated in the plot” he added.

The MP reiterated that he remains innocent, and therefore rejects the allegations.

“Furthermore, l have been advised by my lawyer to say no more on this issue” he concluded.

According to reports, the minor attended a party hosted by Charlie for his teenage child and was allegedly “lured” to a nearby bar where the minor took part in alcoholic drinks.

The reports suggest that the incident allegedly occurred at the bar, and was videotaped by someone who knew the minor’s family.

Charlie became a Member of Parliament for the PPP in 2015 after the party lost the General Elections that year.
