Over 41,000 vehicles with expired road license on country’s roadways; GRA to take action

The Guyana Revenue Authority has found that there are just over 41,000 vehicles, including motorcycles, traversing the country’s roadways that do not have updated road vehicle license. Many of the vehicles have been without the road license for well over five years.

Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Godfrey Statia told News Source today that the GRA intends to contact those persons who have been consistently failing to renew their vehicle road license in an effort to have them to do immediately.

Additionally, the Police will also be contacted on the issue.

He said the GRA was making some checks into certain vehicle registration numbers and it was then that it was realized that many of the vehicle owners have not been updating their road license.

“We are going through our database so that we could get in touch with all those who have not taken out their license”, he said.

Mr. Statia explained that with the vehicle license usually due for renewal annually around the birthday of the owner, many of the persons “have been falling through the cracks”. He said the GRA will ensure it writes the persons and get them to visit the GRA to update their documents, before other steps are taken.

But some sources close to the Police have explained that thorough checks will have to be done, because in many instances when vehicles are written off, the owners would cease seeking license for the vehicles since they are no longer on the road.

Guyana registers close to 10,000 new vehicles annually.
