President Ali said his government is serious about improving the lives of members of the Joint Services and he hopes that the adjustments prove the commitment to the promised improvements.

More than 8000 members of the Joint Services will benefit from adjustments to their current salaries which will be in addition to the 8% salary increase that was announced for public servants recently.

President Irfaan Ali made the announcements today from his Office, indicating that the adjustments will take effect from January of next year and will be in addition to the recently announced salary increases.

In the Guyana Police Force, ranks from the position of Constable to Assistant Commissioner will see adjustments in their salaries ranging from 8% in some instances to 21.7% in the case of Deputy Superintendents. The majority of ranks will see an additional 8% being added to their salaries from the new year.

Several Member of the Guyana Fire Service will also see salary adjustments which will add an additional 8% to their salaries from the new year.

For the Guyana Defence Force, the President announced salary adjustments only for recruits and privates. There were no announcements for more senior ranks and officers and it is unclear when additional announcements will be made, though the President indicated that before the end of the week, various adjustments will be announced.

There were also no announcements made for the Prison Service or the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit.

President Ali said his government is serious about improving the lives of members of the Joint Services and he hopes that the adjustments prove the commitment to the promised improvements.

He said “these revisions to the salaries of the members of the Disciplined Services will benefit an estimated 8000 persons, and will increase the disposable incomes of our men and women in uniform by over $1 billion annually. This represents the latest installment of my Government’s unwavering commitment to continue to improve the working conditions of our employees in the public sector and, indeed, of all Guyanese. As I said, over the course of this week, will continue to make announcements in relation to different categories of workers. I wish now to have a few words with our men and women in uniform”.

The President also made it known that the adjustments come with great costs to the Treasury.

“We expect you to honour these adjustments with dignity; with hard work; with accountability; with transparency. And we expect you to perform at all times at the highest level. We expect you to deliver a better service to the people of our country. Things will only get better. Our country and conditions under which you live will only get better. I assure you of this. Under this People’s Progressive Party Civic government you can be assured of a Guyana that will get better, that will grow faster and will deliver better to every single Guyanese, every single family”, Ali said.

The Guyana Police Force released images of many junior members of the Force gathered at various stations celebrating the increases. The Force also expressed “kudos” to the President for the increases, as the Minister of Home Affairs and his Permanent Secretary also offered thanks to the President and his government.
