The Parliamentary Committee of Appointments has named two nominees for the position of Director and Deputy Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

In its Second Report, tabled in the National Assembly on Monday, the Committee named Mathew Edward Hugh Langevine as the most suitable candidate for the position of Director of the FIU. The report said this decision was taken by consensus. Additionally, Abiose Thomas was recommended for the position of Deputy Director of the FIU.

The report said there were 17 candidates for Director and Deputy Director and eight persons were shortlisted and interviewed in the first stage.

After that, the top three were selected following which the Committee named the top ranked candidates respectively.

The Committee also agreed that the top ranked candidate would be given the position on a due diligence process. Should the top ranked candidate not accept the position or fail the due diligence process the second ranked candidate will get the position.

The Report made it clear that Langenvine was in fact not the top ranked candidate but he was found to be most suitable.

The FIU is a creature of the Anti – Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act and is tasked with investigating persons suspected of financial crimes.

The FIU works out of the Ministry of Finance and closely with the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) of the Guyana Police Force.
