Passenger busted with cocaine in rum bottles at CJIA

A passenger who was about  to board a New York bound Caribbean Airlines flight is the latest person to be arrested for drug trafficking.

The man was busted at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on Sunday morning with over 10 pounds of cocaine in his luggage. The bust was made by the narcotics branch of the police force.

There are reports that the cocaine may have been concealed in bottles of rum and the passenger now claims that it was given to him by a friend to take to the United States. He remains in custody and will face charges this week.

Over the past year, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit and the Narcotics Branch of the Guyana Police Force have been stepping up their monitoring of passengers leaving Guyana. There have been several busts for the year at the country’s main International Airport.
